Andrew | Counselor
Introduction
If you're an American living in the Netherlands, finding a therapist who genuinely understands where you're coming from — not just professionally, but personally — can feel like one more thing you have to figure out in a country that already asks a lot of you.
My name is Andrew Wright, and I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and National Certified Counselor (NCC) from Chicago. I made the move to the Netherlands myself, and I know firsthand what it costs to leave — the friendships, the family dinners, and the home you spent your life making yours. I also know the complicated mix of relief, grief, excitement, and disorientation that comes with starting over somewhere new.
My work draws on existential and psychodynamic traditions — approaches that take seriously the idea that what you're carrying isn't just a symptom to be managed, but something worth understanding. I work with individuals navigating anxiety, depression, identity, major life transitions, and the particular kind of loneliness that can come with expat life even when things are going well on paper.
If you're looking for a therapist who speaks your language — literally and culturally — I'd love to connect. I offer a free 20-minute online consultation so we can see if we're a good fit before you commit to anything.
Online therapy
Sessions are conducted via Zoom, making it easy to connect from wherever you are in the Netherlands — or anywhere else. Once we've agreed to work together, we'll find a time that fits your schedule and I'll send a calendar invite so your appointments are easy to track and plan around.Qualifications and registrations

Specialisations and Expertises
Areas of Focus
My work centers on the challenges that tend to surface during major life transitions — the kind that force you to reckon with who you are, what you value, and how you want to live. I work most frequently with individuals navigating:
- Anxiety and depression, particularly where these feel connected to larger questions about meaning and direction
- Expat and cross-cultural adjustment, including the grief, disorientation, and identity questions that can come with relocating
- Life transitions — career changes, relationship shifts, loss, and the periods between one chapter and the next
- Identity and self-understanding, including a sense that something feels off without being able to name exactly what
Approach
Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, I'm interested in what they're pointing toward. Existential and psychodynamic frameworks guide my work — both take seriously the idea that understanding yourself more deeply is the path to living more freely.
Session Expectations
This kind of depth-oriented work is not a quick fix, and I don't present it as one. Most clients find meaningful movement within 8 to 12 sessions, though many choose to continue beyond that as the work deepens. I offer a free 20-minute consultation before we begin so we can assess fit and talk through what you're hoping to get from therapy.
Most common issues I support people with:
Expat adjustment and cross-cultural transition
Moving abroad raises questions that go beyond logistics. Many of my clients arrive feeling disoriented, disconnected, or quietly grief-stricken despite having made the move they wanted. We work to understand what the transition is asking of you and how to actually inhabit the life you've built rather than just manage it.
Anxiety
Anxiety is rarely just nervousness — it often points toward something unresolved or unacknowledged. Rather than working to eliminate it, we work to understand and process what it's signaling, which tends to produce more lasting relief than symptom management alone.
Depression and low mood
Depression often arrives when something important in a person's life has gone unattended for too long. I work with clients to understand what's underneath the flatness and disconnection, and what it might take to genuinely shift it.
Identity and meaning
Who are you when your context changes? Many of my clients are high-functioning people who find themselves quietly asking whether the life they're building actually feels like theirs. These are the questions I find most useful to work with.
Life transitions
Career changes, relationship shifts, loss, relocation — transitions strip away the familiar and force a reckoning. The discomfort of that is real, but so is the opportunity it creates.
